I never really appreciated what the fuss was about the Havaianas and the flipflop craze, until I attended my first Make Your Own Havaianas (MYOH) event three years ago. The brand was celebrating their 50th anniversary back then and they had released a special limited edition pair exclusive for the MYOH weekend.
Six unused pairs and after two more MYOH events later, I finally understood why everybody wants a pair of Havaianas: its become a symbol of status for some; a fashion statement, and the most comfortable travel companion; butfor me I’ll always like my pair for its symbol of creative expression, and a collector’s piece for every MYOH event I’ll be attending in the years to come.
This year, the Glorietta Activity center became a the venue for a Brazilian street party as Havaianas launched Make Your Own Havaianas 2014.
Dancers dressed in Carnaval-inspired outfits swayed to the beat of Brazilian beats while guests were treated to exciting performances by the Brasilipinas community, the groups of Brigada, Escola Sambade Manila, Escola Brasileira de Capoeira, Imperatriz Filipinense Samba School and Futkaleros. On it’s 9th year, guests were treated once again to mix and match everything for their flip flops: from the soles and the straps, to color combinations inspired by street art, to the fun limited edition pins – all exhibiting the spirit of Brazil.
“The streets of Brazil are a free-flowing and spontaneous back and forth of festive cheer, very evident with its people” As the ultimate activity for celebration of self-expression, Havaianas encourages everyone to be as daring as the Brazilians when customizing their flip-flops,” said Brand Development Group Director Ammiel De Leon. “Brazilian culture is all about self expression, and not being ashamed of how vividly you express it.” Anne Gonzalez, Terry SA Managing Director added.
As expected celebrities such as Kathryn Bernardo, Maxene Magalona, Phil and James Younghusband, as well as fashionistas, athletes and select media trooped to the MYOH assembly line to get their pair (or pairs!) of Havaianas to prove that they really are havaianaticos!

The highlight of the event was the 200-year old Brazilian tradition featuring colorful Bonfims – Brazilian wish ribbons tha11t are worn for good luck. The print wishes every wearer Alegria, Diversao, Empolgacao, Euforia, and Felicidade or Joy, Amusement, Excitement, Euphoria and Bliss – true to the Havaianas always summer spirit.
