REALME 6i: 6 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED + UNBOXING AND INITIAL THOUGHTS

Gamechanger brand, realme Philippines is about to shake the industry yet again with the price reveal and launch of the realme 6i happening May 13, 2020.

The former OPPO sub-brand, has definitely come into its own, helping establish a new norm for smartphones with its high specs + affordable pricing proposition.

The realme 6i is the latest in its budget-friendly lineup, and features a quad-camera setup, a processor that’s built for gaming, long lasting battery life, and a price tag that’s below Php 10K—something that everyone should consider especially during this time.

We’ve been using the realme 6i for the past few days so we’re sharing 6 things we like about the realme 6i!

But first, lets unbox this baby!

The realme 6i comes in the trademark bright yellow box of realme with the 6i branding prominently on the front. On top is the realme logo while there’s also the realme6i branding on both sides. On the back are some of the selling points of the phone like the 48MP quad camera, Helio G80 processor, 5000mAh battery and quick charge and more info about the phone (IMEI, serial number, Network details, ram and storage etc)

Lifting the lid of the box, we are greeted by the message “Hey, welcome to realme Family” printed on the sleeve containing documentation. It’s a nice touch true to its promise of creating a family-like community.

Opening it further, you’ll find another inspiring message: “Let’s embrace a new journey.”

This compartment also contains the sim ejector tool, quick start guide and information booklet that gives you details about your new phone. Its just a quick read so you might as well check it out as it provides you with essential information about your phone.

You will also find a soft gel phone case in the package, which is a standard among realme phones.

I really think all phone manufacturers should include one, though as you know accidents do happen and you don’t want to scratch that new phone.

The phone is securely wrapped in translucent plastic that’s sealed, so check that one as well.  Finally there’s the wall charger, which is a quite big, and a USB type C cable! Hooray! I do suggest you take care of this cable as you’ll need it to fast charge your phone or transfer files to your computer.

I have to commend realme Philippines for sending us the official retail package for review, so we could share exactly what you’ll be getting when you purchase one. The unit we got is the 4GB +128 GB, Green Tea colored variant..Nice!

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

  • SIM Tray Ejector Pin x 1
  • Warranty Card x 1
  • Quick Guide x 1
  • Soft Gel Protector Case x 1
  • 18W Quick Charger x 1
  • USB Type-C Cable x 1
  • Screen Protect Film – Pre-Installed

Time to explore the phone!

Up front is a 6.52-inch HD+ 720 x 1600 pixels IPS display with a dew drop notch. The realme 6i is equipped with an 89.8% screen-to-body ratio huge fullscreen, moreover, the 20:9 screen ratio makes the phone slimmer and more information-loaded. The bezels are thin on the sides but it does have a chin.

But its not that big of a deal since it gives you a better hold of the phone and prevent you from accidentally touching the virtual navigation buttons. Plus there’s also a screen protector that’s pre installed on the phone!

As we said, there is a small notch on top that houses a 16 MegaPixel f/2.0 front-facing camera for taking selfies and recording vlogs in full HD. It’s a jump the from the realme 5i’s 8MP front shooter.

On the right side you’ll see the power button while on the left are the volume rocker and SIM card tray.

On the right side you’ll see the power button while on the left are the volume rocker and SIM card tray.

The top part of the phone is clean and free of ports or a mic, while on the bottom you have the loudspeaker, mic, the beloved 3.5 mm audio jack for your wired headphones/earphones and a finally a USB Type C port which is what a lot of fans have long been waiting for.

Last, and certainly the most eye-catching feature of the realme 6i is its back panel. The realme 6i was imagined by Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, (more on him below) and features a shining “striped” design depending on how lights hit it and when you first see it, you’d think it has an embossed streak pattern.

This was achieved through a meticulous spray coating process and repetitive machine polishing. The realme 6i comes in two colorways–Creamy White and Green Tea. As you can see, we got the Green Tea version, which is unlike any other color on a smartphone. It reminds of both nature and our military frontliners.

The back panel houses the 48MP AI Quad Cameras as well as the fingerprint scanner.

SIX FEATURES WE LIKED ABOUT THE REALME 6i

1.         GAMING PROCESSOR: The realme 6i features the world’s First MediaTek Helio G80 SoC with high performance processor that was built for gaming.  It’s octa-core CPU has a main frequency, up to 2.0GHz, offering 35% better single-core performance and 17% better multi-core performance than its predecessor.

The Mali G52 1000MHz GPU also delivers 25% better performance resulting in greater image quality and a more stable frame rate that makes the realme 6i stand out while gaming. realme is a partner of Mobile Legends Bang Bang, so if that’s the game you’re playing, expect near flawless performance from the realme 6i.

2.         48MP AI QUAD CAMERA: realme phones have been remarkable when it comes to its cameras, and the realme 6i doesn’t disappoint. It boasts of the latest flagship, ultra-clear quad camera setup, comprised of a 48MP main camera, an 8MP 119° ultra wide-angle, a macro lens and a B&W portrait lens. The 48MP main sensor has an f/1.8 large aperture, and 6P lens.

It deploys Quad Bayer’s 4-in-1 intelligent pixel binning mechanism that combines four adjacent pixels into a large pixel, enhancing the resolution and quality of images taken even in low-light settings.

The 119° 8MP ultra wide-angle lens on the other hand, has an f/2.25 aperture, so you don’t have to move back to capture the entire scene, whether it’s a large group photo, landscapes or impressive architecture. For those who love taking close ups the 4cm Macro lens let users get closer and discover the beauty of the micro world with the 4cm shooting distance. Lastly there’s also a B&W Portrait lens. The new color filter system enables the portrait lens to detect a wider array of light, assisting the main lens to capture light better, enhance image contrast, create retro-style images, and add texture to portraits.

As for the selfie camera it has a 16MP Super Clear Selfie AI Beauty mode and can now capture full HD videos.

3.         MASTERPIECE DESIGN: As mentioned earlier, the realme 6i was designed by Naoto Fukasawa who was also behind the award-winning design of the flagship realme X series Master Edition smartphones. He is also a member of the advisory board for product development and design at MUJI.

The realme 6i adopts the rare spray coating process, and the phone has been polished hundreds of times. As a result, the back of the phone shows an advanced matte visual effect with a delicate and comfortable finish.

Also worth noting is the design of the realme UI which was built for an enhanced and closer to stock android experience. The realme UI was designed keeping 4 things in mind — system colors, icons, wallpapers, and animations.

In terms of colors, realme UI uses high-saturation and high-brightness colors to construct an authentic color scheme, bringing a sense of vitality and freshness.

realme UI also introduced the icon customization function. Users can not only change the shape and size of the icons but can change the internal graphic size of the icons.

To match the vibrant app icons, realme UI also brings in 11 new wallpapers inspired by natural elements which are indeed a perfect match for its color scheme.

As for animation realme UI is equipped with the latest quantum animation engine, which improves the screen fluency.

4.         QUICK CHARGE WITH USB TYPE C: One of the most welcome changes of the realme 6i is its migration to USB type C, which means faster charging and file transfer.  The 18W Quick Charge and a 9V/2A charging kit further raise the charging speed and reduce the charging time.

5.         MASSIVE BATTERY: Complementing the quick charge feature is its massive 5000mAh—battery. It features triple safety protection, this massive battery eases concerns for a smartphone battery life. So no need to worry about forgetting your powerbank, or running out of juice while in the middle of a marathon gaming sessions.

6.         EXTRA FEATURES: Dual Mode Music Share, Focus Mode and Dark Mode. These are just three of the features I know you’d have to try out with the realme 6i. Dual Mode Music Share allows you and a friend to enjoy the same video or song at the same time on one device—one via bluetooth earphones and the other through wired earphones.

Focus mode on the other hand is perfect for helping you concentrate and relax, without getting distracted from your phone. Turn on “Focus Mode” and the system turn on DND (Do Not Disturb) to prevent new notifications from swarming in, and simultaneously play some relaxing music to further soothe your nerves.

Lastly, Dark Mode has been optimized to work with more third-party apps, and you can even set it to automatically turn off at sunrise and turn on at sunset.
