Pinoy Travel: the SMART way to book Provincial Bus Tickets

PinoyTravel (1)
PinoyTravel CEO and co-founder Au Soriano describes how the provincial bus system in the country has not evolved in the past twenty years, despite major advancements in technology. With the help of PinoyTravel, provincial bus commuters no longer have to line up for hours inside bus terminals to book a seat to various provincial destinations.

When the most high tech thing about our local bus companies is having wi-fi onboard their buses, you just know that there’s really a lot of improvement that needs to be done.
Just look at the recent news reports regarding bus accidents or the usual TV news coverage at the bus terminals (especially in Cubao) every Christmas season, Halloween, or most recently, the Holy Week break. From the overcrowded terminals, the long waiting times and the irate passengers who are sometimes forced to ride colorum buses because they couldn’t get anymore tickets—vacation ruined before it has even begun.

It was a similar story shared by Pinoy Travel founder and CEO Au Soriano who hailed from Bauang La Union. Growing up, she relates having to regularly travel between Manila, Bulacan, Pangasinan and La Union taking provincial buses– with her entire family.
A problem she sought to resolve after working 20 plus years in a corporate telco by putting up Pinoy Travel—an online bus booking system.
While the telecom industry she observed has leapfrogged from telegram to Facebook, she realized that for the same 25 plus year period, the provincial travel industry has remained the same.

People had to physically go to bus terminals to buy tickets and in most parts of the country where there are no bus terminals—wait by the roadside as chance passengers.

She said it was just mind boggling that it was actually easier to book a flight anywhere in the world than book a bus ride to city just a few miles away.

And so the idea for PinoyTravel was born. Soriano, alongside colleague Maui Millan, pitched the idea to IdeaSpace, the largest privately-backed technology incubator in the country, with wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. as one of its backers.

PinoyTravel eventually became part of its pioneering batch of start-up incubatees and commercially launched in October 2013. Despite being a young startup, it has already been awarded the “IT Startup of the Year” by the IT Journalists Association of the Philippines (Cyberpress) for its bold attempts at revolutionizing domestic travel in the country with the help of technology.

Thanks to PinoyTravel, the country’s first online and mobile bus booking system, provincial bus commuters no longer have to wake up early and line up at the bus terminal just to secure bus tickets to the various provincial destinations around the country.
With the help of PinoyTravel, Filipinos looking to escape to the pristine beaches of Palawan or to the lush landscapes and tourist destinations of Bicol can now do so with only a few clicks of their mouse or taps on their smartphones.

In partnership with bus companies DLTBCo. and Cherry Bus, PinoyTravel now offers online booking of bus seats from Manila to Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Sorsogon, as well as the route between Puerto Princesa and El Nido in Palawan.
