In 2010, there was still no business like show business

A Yahoo! Yearender

From wardrobe malfunctions, noontime romances, surprise weddings and breakups, 2010 turned out to be another colorful year for the local entertainment industry—and through it all, Filipino Netizens have used the Internet to keep up with all the showbiz news and updates. The Manila Times with the help of search engine Yahoo! looks back at the top trends, stories and topics from billions of consumer searches and identifies what kept Filipinos occupied in cyberspace for local showbiz news.

Anne Curtis’s wardrobe malfunction
The split second slip that gave everyone a peek. The actress was in Boracay for an ASAP XV event when her bikini top came undone and exposed her right breast. Despite the quickness of Sam Milby to cover her up, some audience members apparently were much faster as they took photos of the incident. Images containing uncensored views of her right breast made its way to the Internet and spread through sites like Twitter and Facebook. Curtis made an appeal and said she felt really sad and disrespected about the incident but there was nothing she can do but move on.

Separate lives
Her brother might have become the most powerful man in the country, but even President Benigno Aquino 3rd couldn’t do anything to stop the breakup of Kris Aquino and basketball player James Yap. In an interview on The Buzz, Kris admitted, “Sumuko na ako [I have given up]” and both parties have since hired lawyers to work on the annulment of their marriage. Kris was then linked to Mayor Junjun Binay of Makati City, while Yap was rumored to be dating TV host Grace Lee and actress Isabel Oli.

Bagets couple William Martinez and Yayo Aguila also called it quits after 25 years of marriage with Aguila saying they grew apart.

Eat Bulaga hosts Vic Sotto and Pia Guanio broke up after four years and the reason remains unknown.

The year also spelled the end of Kimerald—the love team of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, as well as Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal.

Marian versus Bela
An averted catfight. “Ang landi-landi mo! Ang pangit-pangit mo! Kahit kailan, huwag mong iisipin na mai-insecure ako sa ‘yo! Hindi ka magugustuhan ni Dingdong [Dantes] kasi diring-diri ‘yan kapag may eksena kayo!” apparently was what Marian Rivera told Bella Padilla before they were met by GMA 7 Senior Vice President for Entertainment Wilma Galvante in a closed-door meeting. The two worked together opposite Rivera’s boyfriend Dantes in the remake of the Koreanovela Endless Love and the movie You to Me Are Everything. Is there really a nasty streak hiding behind Rivera’s angelic beauty?

Angelica Panganiban controversies
Panganiban was literally caught with her hand inside boyfriend Derek Ramsay’s pants in a tabloid photo.
The couple, however, brushed it off saying they were just hamming it up for the camera.

Boyfriend issues also led to a verbal smack down with actress Gretchen Barretto who was Ramsay’s co-star in the ABS-CBN soap opera Magkaribal. Barretto apparently told the press that she only wanted to see photos of Ramsay from his South African trip. Panganiban took offense and took the war to Twitter and tweeted “Single ka teh?” Eventually, Panganiban made peace with Barretto only to find herself caught in another controversy with the latter’s sister Claudine. Panganiban, according to the younger Barretto supposedly told people she was having an affair with Ramsay’s friend, Martin Castro. Both camps apparently had talks to settle the issue.

New celebrity moms
Three famous celebrities became first time moms this year; Judy Ann Santos gave birth to Juan Luis or Lucho, on October 7 at the Asian Hospital in Muntinlupa City; Roxanne Guinoo and Filipino Chinese boyfriend Elton Yap welcomed Rain Eliana on September 13; while StarStruck alumnus LJ Reyes gave birth to Ethan Akio her child with fellow GMA 7 artist Paulo Avelino on July 24.

Angel Locsin is still it!
Angel Locsin reclaimed her throne after FHM Philippines once again named her the Sexiest Woman in 2010. Locsin had a total of 284,156 votes against runner-up Cristine Reyes, who garnered 227,380 votes.
She also made her highly anticipated return after a yearlong hiatus in the ABS-CBN fantasy series Imortal.
She plays a woman who can transform into a wolf opposite John Lloyd Cruz.

Celebrity weddings
The Ogie Alcasid-Regine Velasquez nuptial may be the wedding of the year, but it certainly wasn’t the most controversial. Mariel Rodriguez and Robin Padilla surprised everyone after announcing that they had gotten married in India on August 19. The two met just months earlier after Padilla became a guest host for the now defunct Wowowee.

Krista Ranillo wed Niño Jefferson Lim, a US-based Filipino businessman who owns the Pacific Supermarket chain, putting an end to rumors of her involvement with Manny Pacquiao.

Ciara Sotto married boyfriend Jojo Oconer in an intimate ceremony at the Manila Polo Club in Makati City on January 17, while Rica Peralejo married church pastor, Joseph Bonifacio, on January 29 on the shores of Kawayan Cove in Nasugbu, Batangas.

Sunshine Dizon wed boyfriend Timothy Tan, a pilot, in private rites at the Valle Verde 6 clubhouse in Pasig City on March 20.

Cam scandals
After Katrina Halili another StarStruck alumnus found himself in a cam scandal. X-rated webcam photos of a man who resembled Mark Herras appeared online in October. Based on the web cam screen caps, it showed that “mark h” was engaged in a chat with another man and treated his chatmate to a “show” by exposing manhood on the webcam. Herras denied it was him, saying he was at a GMA event at that time and that he never uses his real name online.

KC Concepcion’s manager resigns
The year 2010 had been a good one for Megadaughter KC Concepcion. After being chosen to host ASAP XV, she was also given her own talk show entitled Simply KC. She also starred in a movie opposite her father Gabby Concepcion entitled I’ll Be There.

But in August, Concepcion’s manager Shirley Kuan resigned prompting rumors that the Megadaughter had an attitude problem. Conception quickly signed up with Star Magic who dispelled the rumors saying she was “easy to deal with.”

Celebrity deaths
The entertainment world also bid farewell to some of its stars. Reynaldo Alfredo Hipolito, or Palito, died April 12 because of complications of his respiratory disease.

Another comedian, Redford White, passed away on July 25 because of brain cancer.

The industry also mourned the death of Charlie Davao who succumbed to colon cancer on August 8.

Two children of showbiz personalities met tragic deaths in March: TV host Toni Rose Gayda’s son Edward James Lim died after falling from the balcony of the family’s fourth floor condominium, while Cesar Montano’s son, Christian Angelo Manghilot, was found dead at the family residence in Batasan Hills, Quezon City. Police ruled his death as a suicide.

Former Miss Mauritius Viveka Babajee who became involved in the 1994 Manila Film Festival Scam was also found dead in her Mumbai apartment. Indian police said Babajee had committed suicide because of depression.
