Save and Share Blog Series: On Buying a Washing Machine

As part of Electrolux’s Delightful-E Simple campaign launch last July 30, the brand also tapped several entertainment and lifestyle bloggers for its Save & Share Blog Series.

The Save & Share Blog Series aims to help moms save not just money but also their precious time by making their everyday tasks delightfully simple and easy.

I was actually quite surprised when they considered me for the campaign, since I’d probably be the last person you’d think about any home-related stuff.

Everyone knows me as more of a toy/gadget geek kinda guy, and although I’m a bit OC when it comes to doing household chores, and taking care of my stuff, I am actually quite clueless when it comes to all the other appliances that doesn’t involve a keyboard, or remote control.

But when they told me that we would be interviewing Electrolux brand ambassadors Cheska Garcia Kramer, Chef Rosebud Benitez, Chef Bruce Lim and Mommy Mundo’s Janice Villanueva about creative and effective ways to save household expenses, I knew it was going to be quite fun and informative.

Of all the Electrolux appliances they showcased, the one that interested me the most was their washing machine, and that is our topic for this week.

As much as I hate to admit it, I do not know how to handwash my clothes–and being allergic to laundry detergent, is just one of my many excuses.

I spend about P300 to P500 a week on laundry, and have been planning to get my own automatic washer for quite some time, thankfully my quick chat with Chef Bruce, Cheska, Chef Rosebud and Mommy Mundo gave me a lot of useful tips.

What do I need to look for in a washing machine?
Chef Bruce: For me I choose the load capacity and the energy and water saving capabilities. Since we are a family of boys spills and mud is an everyday thing so we do a lot of laundry! Chef Bruce Lim
Cheska: For us, we always look like at the economical side. For one, it has to be eco-friendly which Electrolux has in their washing machines, it has to be energy saver and at the same time, dahil eco-friendly siya, tipid din siya sa pag gamit ng water, tipid din siya sa pag gamit ng sabon, diba? And when it comes to size naman it (Electrolux) comes in different sizes and when it comes to how looks naman, Electrolux has already moved with the time. It looks sleek, it looks nice, and it does what it’s supposed to do- it performs well. And we all know the Electrolux appliances last a long time so I that’s what matters the most, na magtagal talaga siya. And you really put the machine into good use and for a long time. Then it’s good investment.

Cheska Garcia-Kramer
Chef Rosebud: I consider the durability of the brand and the functions that should fit our lifestyle.
Janice: Criteria would be: Brand, Capacity, Energy Consumption, Functionalities.
First choose a brand that is dependable, durable and provides good customer service.
Choose a model with the right capacity for your family. Getting one that is too big is a waste or resources and space, getting one too small will cause you to spend more time and energy on laundering.
Energy consumption is key because of electricity costs these days, you would not want your laundering costs to add to that Meralco bill. Some think that a fully automated machine (washer+dryer) as opposed to a (washer+spinner) will cause a spike in energy usage at home but I find that it actually doesn’t!
Extra functionalities such as a load alarms to allow you to maximize loads, vapor action to remove allergens, are great bonuses.

How do you manage your laundry expenses (water, electricity, detergent, etc)? What tips can you share to make sure that you don’t spend much for laundry without sacrificing wash quality?
Chef Bruce: It all comes down to choosing a good washing machine.

Cheska: Yes, I agree, choose the right washing machine. Why? For one, Electrolux is economical, it’s eco-friendly, it’s energy-saver, and going back dahil it’s economical and eco-friendly, tipid siya sa water and it’s earth friendly.

Chef Rosebud: Well, like for water, we use a rainwater filtration system so we get to use the rain water for our other needs, like for watering the plants, cleaning the garage, washing of plates and even washing of clothes. And we have a schedule as to how many times in a week we’ll do our laundry. Like for us, we do if just twice a week. Chef Rosebud Benitez-Velasco

Janice: To save on expenses, we schedule laundry day twice a week, max of 3x. Ive had my share of OC helpers who cant stand see a growing pile of laundry and wants to wash clothes almost every day. It actually sounds like a great idea but the downside is that she would launder clothes even if the load was not full and this is a waste of electricity.
Having a washer-dryer allowed us to save on water. Our old machine was a washer-spinner and the helper would remove the clothes from the spinner and rinse it up to 3x- consuming so much water! That doesn’t even include the last soak with fabric softener. With the washer-dryer, the clothes are spun inside the drum from process to process (wash to spin to fabric softener to dry) so use of water is controlled.
We have found the right formula for detergent use and that is to use 2-3 scoops of detergent per 7K load. My husband is sensitive to scents and does not like our clothes smelling to strongly of soap or fabric softener so we have to control the amount used while making sure we use enough to get the clothes clean. For detergent and fab softener, I just monitor the use on a monthly basis. Knowing how many Kg of detergent our household would consume a month, if we run out of supply earlier than usual then the helper is using too much and I would need to check on why this is so.

From their answers, its easy to determine who spends a lot of time with their dirty laundry (hehehe)  and Mommy Janice gave some pretty useful tips in choosing a washer- Brand, Capacity, Energy Consumption, and Function!

I’ll be sure to put those in mind on my next trip to the appliance store–and probably check out those Electrolux machines!
