When you were a kid, you never batted an eyelash at running through the rain or hopping into a puddle like it was the greatest thing ever — and it was. These days, though, you would not dare step into the office wearing a mud-covered, worn-out shoe. Polishing and giving your shoes the once over with an old toothbrush have become the norm in our daily lives.

In trying to re-capture that cavalier attitude towards footwear, young people from across the National Capital Region and Calabarzon grabbed their video cameras and donned their Chucks, in an effort to win Converse’s Dirty Chucks Video-making contest.

Students were tasked to film a thirty second to a minute-and-a-half video centered on pairs of lovingly worn—and sometimes heavily abused, pairs of Converse’s flagship brand Chuck Taylor All-Stars.

The top 10 entries were screened recently at De La Salle, College of Saint Benilde. The video of the host-school’s representative, Nicolo Santos, bagged the Grand Prize.  He took home PhP 50,000, and 50,000 pesos worth of Converse products. The second placer Yves Nopueto of the Mapua Institute of Technology took 2nd Place and got Php 30,000 and 30,000 pesos worth of Converse products. Another entry from DLS-CSB, Krista Ortega, came in third. She got Php10,000 and 10,000 pesos worth of Converse products.

Titans of Filipino film, Ricky Lee, Lilit Reyes, and King Palisoc were seen making an appearance at the rock-and-roll spirited gala. Before that though, they spoke to students and other aspiring filmmakers about their experience in writing, directing, and conceptualizing movies and music videos in. These Converse All Star Digital Master Classes on Digital Filmmaking were held in cooperation with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Digital Filmmaking Program.

“The level of creativity these young people have shown is really inspiring,” said Converse Marketing Director Eli Bonsol. Around 60 hopefuls submitted in the window of a little under a month. “We’re very proud to have been part of their artistic experience,” she added.

The Dirty Chucks Video Contest is part of Converse’s campaign, “Shoes are boring. Wear Sneakers.” According to Eli, sneakers have always been the footwear that represented those who dared to be different – the artists, the creatives, and the so-called rebels.

“We want everyone to feel how liberating it is to a take a break from the usual stifling footwear that are shoes,” she enthused. “Sporting a pair of Converse sneakers is one of the ways to loosen up and let your unique-self shine.”

The finalists were judged based on the creativity of their story. Their digital celluloid masterpieces were put through a gauntlet of discerning judges namely Icon de Jesus, AF Beneza, Budjette Tan, Lilit Reyes, and Dan Mindanao. For the Finals, they were judged based on the votes of the people on the Facebook app on their page.
