As the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) draws near, one entry has captured the attention of film enthusiasts and cultural advocates alike: Isang Himala. This musical adaptation of the 1982 cinematic masterpiece, Himala, promises not only to reintroduce the iconic story to a modern audience but also to cement its legacy as a cultural treasure. As a bold and innovative take on the original work, Isang Himala invites audiences to reflect on faith, humanity, and the power of storytelling. But can it perform miracles at the box office and in the hearts of its viewers this holiday season?
A Reimagining Rooted in Legacy
Directed by MMFF Best Director Pepe Diokno and co-written by National Artist Ricky Lee, Isang Himala transforms the classic film into a recreation of the musical adaptation. The story revolves around Elsa, a faith healer whose miraculous claims ignite both fervent devotion and controversy in the fictional town of Baryo Cupang. First brought to life by Nora Aunor in the 1982 film, Elsa remains one of Philippine cinema’s most iconic characters.
This new adaptation draws heavily from the 2003 stage production, Himala: Isang Musikal. National Artist Ricky Lee, who also wrote the screenplay for the original film, emphasized the importance of revisiting the material. “Para sa akin itong ginagawa namin ngayon ay isang tribute sa pelikulang nagawa noong 1982. Mula noong ipalabas ito noon, matapos ay naging musikal sa entablado at ngayon naman ay naging pelikula base sa musical. Sa palagay ko patuloy itong magkakaroon ng iba’t ibang bersyon at magpapatuloy pa ang pagkukwento natin ng tungkol sa himala,” he shared during the film’s grand launch.
Elsa for a New Generation
Stepping into the role of Elsa is singer-actress Aicelle Santos, who first portrayed the character in the stage musical. Santos takes on the monumental task of reinterpreting one of the most memorable roles in Philippine cinema. Reflecting on her approach, she shared, “I wanted to honor the original while making the character my own. I didn’t want to mimic Nora Aunor; instead, I focused on capturing the emotional depth and complexity of Elsa’s journey.”
Her portrayal aims to make Elsa more relatable to modern audiences. Ricky Lee explained this deliberate choice: “Aicelle feels like an everyday person, someone like us. This Elsa now feels more real compared to Nora. They didn’t try to imitate or replace her.”
Santos recounted a memorable moment when Nora Aunor watched the stage production: “Yes po, nanood si Miss Nora Aunor sa amin, at naalala kong niyakap niya kami, nangingilid ang kanyang luha. At may litrato ako, may ebidensiya, na magkahawak kami ng kamay, na kilig na kilig po ako.” This encounter, she said, felt like a blessing and a validation of their work.
A Launch to Remember
The grand launch of Isang Himala was nothing short of extraordinary. Held as a celebration of Filipino artistry, the event brought together the film’s cast, crew, and supporters. Highlights included musical performances that gave a glimpse into the emotional resonance of the adaptation.
One of the most powerful moments was Aicelle Santos’ performance of Gawin Mo Akong Sining, the musical’s signature song. Singing with raw emotion, Santos drew the audience into Elsa’s world, leaving many in tears. Later, the ensemble cast delivered a stirring rendition of Ang Himala ay Nasa Puso, closing the event on an uplifting note.
The trailer premiere offered a breathtaking glimpse into the world of Baryo Cupang. Its haunting visuals, emotionally charged scenes, and a poignant score by Vincent A. De Jesus captivated the audience. The trailer concluded with the voice of Nora Aunor, whose iconic line, “Walang himala!” echoed through the room, evoking nostalgia and goosebumps.
A Timeless Story for Today’s World
While Isang Himala is deeply rooted in its cultural and historical context, its themes remain strikingly relevant. “Our experiences as Filipinos repeat generation after generation,” Ricky Lee observed. “We still face the same social concerns, like waiting for a strong man or a big figure to show us the way, instead of realizing that the answers are within our hearts and not in someone else.”
Director Pepe Diokno, who won MMFF’s Best Director award last year for Gomburza, shared his vision for the adaptation. “The heart of the movie lies in its raw struggles and conflicts faced by the characters,” he said. By exploring the complexities of faith, hope, and human desires, the film challenges viewers to reflect on their own beliefs and the choices they make.
Beyond the Screen: A Celebration of Filipino Talent
Isang Himala is more than just a film; it’s a showcase of the Philippines’ finest talents. The cast includes some of the country’s most celebrated theater actors, such as Bituin Escalante, David Ezra, Kakki Teodoro, and Neomi Gonzales. Escalante, who plays Elsa’s mother, expressed her gratitude to the producers for championing meaningful stories. “This film isn’t just entertainment—it’s a reflection of who we are and the struggles we face. Stories like this remind us of our humanity,” she said.
The film’s music, composed by Vincent A. De Jesus, adds another layer of emotional depth. Combining haunting melodies with powerful lyrics, the score captures the essence of the story and amplifies its emotional impact.
