TIEZA Rolls Out Enhanced Online Travel Tax Services to Deliver a Smoother, Stress-Free Travel Experience
The government is pushing for a more modern, traveler-friendly Philippines — and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) is taking another major step forward.
During a media briefing held on November 18 in Pasay City, TIEZA expressed its gratitude to millions of outbound Filipino travelers whose travel tax payments continue to fund projects that strengthen the country’s tourism backbone. These contributions, TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark T. Lapid emphasized, go far beyond a mandatory expense. They are the unseen force behind better roads, ports, water systems, and public facilities in destinations all over the country.

“Each time a Filipino traveler pays the travel tax, they directly contribute to nation-building,” Lapid said. “These contributions fund the development of access roads, ports, water systems, and facilities that make destinations more connected, resilient, and sustainable.”
For TIEZA, “Building Tourism Together” is more than a slogan — it is a literal collaboration between government, private stakeholders, communities, and the Filipino traveler.
“Every flight, every trip, and every travel tax payment helps us build a stronger, more inclusive, and globally competitive tourism economy,” Lapid added.

Where Travel Tax Goes: Infrastructure, Education, Culture
TIEZA also reiterated where every peso of travel tax goes — a point often overlooked but essential to understanding its national impact.
Under Section 73 of Republic Act No. 9593 (Tourism Act of 2009):
- 50% goes to TIEZA
- For building tourism infrastructure such as access roads, water systems, and community facilities
- 40% goes to CHED
- For tourism-related scholarships, training, and education programs
- 10% goes to NCCA
- For cultural preservation, arts development, and heritage support
“Each peso you contribute travels farther than you think,” Lapid said. “It becomes a road that connects communities, clean water that sustains destinations, or a scholarship that nurtures future tourism professionals.”
A More Modern, More Convenient Travel Tax System
To support the government’s Ease of Doing Business mandate, TIEZA continues to upgrade the Online Travel Tax Services System (OTTSS) — a platform used by millions of outbound travelers each year.
What used to require long lines at the airport can now be done anytime, anywhere, including:

- Online travel tax payment
- Online application for Travel Tax Exemption Certificate (TEC)
- Online application for Reduced Travel Tax
These digital services especially benefit the estimated 800,000 travelers annually who qualify for exemptions and reduced rates — such as OFWs, infants, minors, government delegates, and other eligible groups.

With the enhanced system, more than 4.6 million outbound travelers can now settle their travel tax obligations or file applications in just a few minutes through their mobile phones.
“Our priority is to make travel tax transactions as effortless as possible,” Lapid explained. “Every minute saved online translates to more meaningful time spent with family, work, or opportunities abroad.”

Integrated With eGov PH for a Seamless Travel Experience
Earlier this year, TIEZA partnered with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to bring travel tax services into the eGov PH Super App and eTravel System.
This integration means:
- Travelers can pay their full travel tax directly inside the eGov PH Super App
- Personal information is pulled automatically from their eTravel profile
- The entire process becomes faster, more secure, and entirely digital
With several pre-travel requirements now accessible in one ecosystem, outbound Filipinos can expect a more streamlined experience long before they reach the airport.

Building Tourism Together, One Traveler at a Time
As the tourism sector continues its recovery and growth, TIEZA says its commitment remains the same: transparent processes, stronger partnerships, and continued digital innovation.
“Government service should be as seamless and dependable as booking your next flight,” Lapid said in closing. “Through your continued support, we can keep building a tourism industry that connects, empowers, and inspires — one journey at a time.”
