Visa Holiday Spend Trends: How Filipinos Pay During Christmas

Christmas in the Philippines has always been about movement—of people, of families, of money. Malls fill up, balikbayans fly home, suitcases roll through airports, and cards get tapped a little more often than usual. According to new data from Visa, December isn’t only the most festive month of the year—it’s also the busiest when it comes to spending.

Fresh insights from Visa Consulting and Analytics (VCA) reveal that December consistently emerges as the peak month for card transactions among Filipinos. Active card payment volumes rise sharply compared to the rest of the year, reflecting how deeply the holiday season shapes consumer behavior—both culturally and economically.

Based on card-present transactions, where both the cardholder and physical card are used at the point of sale, Visa’s analysis paints a detailed picture of how spending unfolds throughout the month—locally and overseas.

“Christmas brings people together, and our data underscores the holidays’ enduring socio-cultural and economic significance to the country,” said Jeffrey Navarro, Country Manager for Visa Philippines. “For Visa, it’s important that we enable these personal journeys and experiences through payments that are fast, seamless, and secure, so that Filipinos and tourists alike can have meaningful celebrations anywhere across the country and abroad.”

The local rush, then the overseas spree

Filipinos don’t wait until the last minute to start shopping. Visa’s data shows local card transactions steadily climb as December progresses, with noticeable spikes every weekend. The biggest surge happens on December 23—the final weekend before Christmas Eve—when malls and commercial districts reach peak activity as shoppers wrap up gift buying and holiday preparations.

After Christmas, domestic spending cools down as families head back to their hometowns and settle into the slower rhythm between Christmas Day and New Year’s.

Overseas spending follows a different pattern. For Filipinos traveling abroad, transactions continue to rise after Christmas, peaking on December 29 before gradually tapering off toward the New Year. The trend points to continued leisure, dining, and travel-related purchases during post-Christmas vacations.

Christmas without borders

The holiday season also brings an influx of foreign spending into the Philippines. Tourists and returning overseas Filipinos drive higher local transactions using foreign-issued cards, adding another layer to December’s spending surge.

By payment volume in U.S. dollars, the top inbound corridors come from the United States, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore—highlighting where many holiday travelers are coming from.

Festive spending isn’t confined to Metro Manila either. While Makati and Parañaque remain top destinations, six of the ten highest-spending locations are outside the capital. Cebu, Angeles, and Davao follow closely, underscoring how holiday activity spreads across key cities nationwide.

Different travelers, different priorities

Visa’s data also reveals how spending habits vary depending on where visitors are from. Travelers from the United States, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong tend to spend the most on lodging. Taiwanese and Japanese visitors lean more toward entertainment, while Indian travelers allocate a larger share to education and government-related expenses. Canadians and many American cardholders prioritize food and groceries during their stay.

Together, these patterns show how diverse holiday spending becomes once borders open and travelers converge.

As Christmas spending continues to shape consumer behavior year after year, Visa remains focused on enabling secure, seamless, and innovative payment experiences—helping Filipinos and visitors move, shop, and celebrate with ease during the most festive season of all.
