Toys “R” Us field Philippine representative to Rubik’s Championship

The search is finally over as Toys “R” Us finally determined the country’s representative to the 6th World Rubik’s Championships happening in Bangkok, Thailand.
After a dazzling display of finger speed during the finals held August 29, 2011, at the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City, Richard Jay Apagar earned the right to represent the country in the prestigious competition. The 14-year old student of St. John Baptiste Academy of Manila clocked in an average 10.24 seconds in the 3x3x3 category narrowly beating Durben Virtucio and second runner-up, Simon Lim.

The Grand champion brought home a Sony Playstation 3, a Rubik’s trophy, a medal and a certificate.  The first runner-up won a Nokia C6 cellphone, a medal and a certificate while the third placer got a Nintendo DSi Unit, a medal and a certificate.

“Toys “R” Us highly believes in the development of a child’s mental and cognitive skills through the use of toys,” says Abel Tejam, AVP for Brand Marketing, Toys “R” Us.  “The play of sounds and lights in musical toys, physical & mental challenges in construction toys such as building blocks and games such as puzzles, and the world-famous Rubik’s cube, among others, are just some of the helpful tools that contribute to the quick progress of children. Staging an event like the Rubik’s Speed Challenge is one channel to encourage children to learn while having fun,” adds Tejam.
Various exciting speed challenges and games were also featured during the Grand Finals, such as a yoyo exhibition from members of Flipspin, an extreme yo-yoing community in the Philippines and Speedstacks.  Speedstacks players demonstrated their hand-eye coordination, agility and ambidexterity as they completed in a short span of time the 3-3-3, 3-6-3, and cycle challenges.
