realme 15 Pro 5G First Impressions: Can One Pro Do It All?

realme is making a bold move this year. For the first time, there’s not going to be a Pro+ variant of its flagship number series.

There’s only the realme 15 5G and the realme 15 Pro 5G carrying the weight of the series. It’s a gamble, especially for fans who looked to the “Plus” as the true upgrade and the easy choice for those who want the midrange flagship experience.

But after living with the phone for a bit, it surprisingly doesn’t feel like a compromise. If anything, the Pro alone might be enough.

Here’s our unboxing and first impressions of the realme 15 Pro 5G.

A Special Unboxing: Creator Kit

realme usually holds a “kumustahan” with its media partners when launching a new device, and this time was quite special because we received a specially curated kit. Inside this huge black box were two thoughtful extras that tie into the brand’s “Live Real in Every Shot” campaign: the Hollyland Lark A1 wireless microphone, which ensures every story is heard in crisp, clear audio, and the Fujifilm Instax mini Link 3 printer, a fun way to turn digital snaps into tangible prints you can keep or share. Together, they make the unboxing feel less like setting up a phone and more like opening a full storytelling toolkit.

The unboxing experience is as familiar as it gets — realme hasn’t strayed from its trademark bold yellow packaging. Slide the lid off and you’re greeted by the “Welcome to the realme Family” compartment box which stores the sim ejector tool, warranty card, quick quide, and plastic case. I do like the plastic case this time with the ribbed texture and its not gray anymore so you could still see the real color of the phone.

The realme 15 Pro 5G unit is wrapped in plastic and already fitted with a pre-installed screen protector so it’s ready to use straight out of the box.

Underneath, you’ll find an 80W SUPERVOOC fast charger and a sturdy USB-C cable. Nothing flashy, nothing missing — just the essentials packed neatly, the kind of setup that lets you unbox and start using the phone right away without extra purchases.

Slim, light, and tougher than it looks

The first impression comes when you hold it. At 7.79mm thin and just 187 grams, it’s easy to forget there’s a massive 7,000mAh battery inside. The Flowing Silver version gleams with a glossy finish, while Velvet Green offers a softer, leather-like texture that feels warmer in hand.

It’s slim, stylish, but not fragile. With IP66, IP68, and IP69 protection, the 15 Pro can shrug off dust, rain, and even high-pressure water sprays. I’ve tested it underwater and its even got a water eject function.

It’s reassuring to know a lifestyle phone designed for everyday use is also built to survive the unexpected.

A screen made for sharing

Front and center is a 6.8-inch AMOLED display that curves at the edges without overdoing it. The panel runs at 1.5K resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate and can reach an impressive 6,500 nits of brightness. That means whether you’re indoors binging a series or outdoors under the midday sun, everything stays visible and sharp.

Thin bezels give the screen a 94% screen-to-body ratio, and Gorilla Glass 7i adds protection. A few extras sneak in too: the in-display fingerprint scanner doubles as a heart-rate monitor, while an IR blaster on the top edge works as a handy universal remote.

Cameras that keep things consistent

Perhaps the biggest change is in the cameras (for better or worse). realme stepped things up on the camera front. Instead of just one star shooter like the last generation, the 15 Pro brings three 50MP cameras:

Two on the rear: A Sony IMX896 main sensor with OIS plus a 115.6° ultra-wide lens. And a 50MP OV50D front camera all three of which are capable of shooting 4K at 60fps

What stands out is consistency. Early samples show colors and white balance remain uniform across all lenses — no jarring shifts between wide, ultra-wide, or selfie shots. Surrounding the module is MagicGlow 2.0, a light ring with two distinct flashes: one white, one orange-yellow. Together, they act as fill lights to make low-light portraits look softer and more natural.

Beyond the 50MP setup, the realme 15 Pro 5G also adds a bit of fun with its shooting modes. Live Photos capture a few seconds of motion and sound before and after each shot, turning stills into little memory clips you can revisit later. For those who like to experiment, the camera app packs plenty of modes — from Night and Portrait to Street, Panorama, Long Exposure, Dual-View Video, and Starry Mode — giving you the flexibility to match your photos with the moment. It’s the kind of toolkit that makes casual snaps feel a little more creative without needing a separate camera.

But to be honest I am really missing the telephoto lens. Zoom goes down to x2 instead of the x4 or x6 of its Pro+ predecessor. It’s not a big deal but it could be a deal breaker if you are looking for a camera phone for concerts.

Photo editing made easier with AI

AI is where the 15 Pro tries to stand apart, and this time it adds a few more features to make photo editing easier.

AI Recompose analyzes your photo and makes suggestions on how to better compose your photo

AI Smart Remover 2.0 is perfect for those candid shots ruined by photobombers or clutter in the background. With a quick swipe, distractions are gone, leaving your subject cleanly in focus.

AI Party Mode is made for nights out and dimly lit gatherings. It brightens faces, balances skin tones, and makes sure everyone in the shot looks clear, even when the lights aren’t.

But the most interesting is AI Edit Genie. Think of it as a photo editor that listens to you. You can use it in two ways:

AI Inspiration – one tap, and the phone automatically tweaks brightness, contrast, and grain to make your photo look polished without losing its natural feel.

Voice-controlled editing – you literally tell it what you want. Say, “make this brighter,” or “blur the background a little,” and the Genie applies the changes. It currently understands 20 languages, Filipino included, which makes it accessible for more users.

It’s a taste of how AI can remove the learning curve of photo editing — no sliders to adjust, no menus to dig through. You just describe what you see in your head, and the phone tries to match it.

AI Perfect Shot scans your photo library, spots little flaws like blinks or uneven expressions, and suggests subtle facial adjustments so you end up with cleaner, more natural-looking shots.

There’s a catch, though: AI Edit Genie is unlimited for the first month, but after that, usage is capped at 20 edits per day. The limit resets daily, but it doesn’t roll over, so heavy users will need to pace themselves. Still, for casual shooters, that’s more than enough to keep photos looking their best without the extra effort.

Beyond photography, AI runs quietly in the background of gaming. Features like GT Boost 3.0, AI Gaming Coach 2.0, and AI Ultra Touch Control help stabilize frame rates and keep touch input snappy. For those who want control, Geek Power Tuning even lets you adjust CPU and GPU clocks manually.

Performance that ready for multitasking

Unlike last year, powering this Pro is the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, replacing the Dimensity 7300 Energy. The upgrade means faster peak speeds, a stronger GPU, and improved AI performance. It’s paired with up to 12GB of RAM (expandable to 26GB with DRE) and 512GB of storage.

To keep things stable, realme added a 7,000mm² vapor chamber cooling system that spreads heat efficiently and can drop temps by up to 20°C. It makes a difference during long gaming sessions or when juggling multiple apps — the phone stays smooth instead of sluggish.

Battery that lasts, charging that keeps up

The 7,000mAh battery is one of the largest in its class. It’s rated for over 22 hours of YouTube playback, nearly 30 hours of video calls, or 113 hours of Spotify streaming.

When it’s time to recharge, 80W SUPERVOOC gets you to 50% in about 25 minutes and to 100% in just over an hour. There’s also a Bypass charging mode that powers the phone directly during heavy gaming, keeping the battery cooler and healthier in the long run.

More ways to keep memories alive

realme also wants its fans — the realme Squad — to find new ways of preserving their stories. That’s why the 15 Series launches alongside partnerships with Hollyland and Fujifilm. The Hollyland Lark A1 wireless microphone ensures voices come through crystal clear, whether for vlogs or family videos, while the Instax mini Link 3 printer turns digital snapshots into instant prints. It’s a thoughtful reminder that memories don’t just live on screens — they’re meant to be heard, shared, and held.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

I was initially hesitant about the missing Pro+ and I still feel like its a big risk, but the realme 15 Pro 5G doesn’t read like a compromise. Instead, it consolidates design, display, performance, and AI into a single, confident device. It’s slimmer, brighter, and more versatile than the 14 Pro — and it shows how far midrange phones have come.

The real question is price. But if realme gets that right, this gamble could prove worth it.

The realme 15 Series 5G launches in the Philippines on September 16, with pre-orders open until September 26. Each pre-order comes with freebies worth up to ₱3,897: a TechLife Smart Band Fit, TechLife Clip-On Earbuds 2, and a 1-Year Screen Damage Protection Plan.
