Miss Earth Philippines candidates on their advocacies, celebrity crushes and their “mySlim” secrets

When I used to write for The Manila Times a few years back, I often had the chance to interview The Miss Earth Philippines candidates whenever they made their rounds at the newspaper offices. And for one day of the year we got to know more about these towering beauties before their coronation night.  Some of them were really prepared and confident to answer whatever questions we had, while there were those who still struggled between balancing their poise and giving sensible replies.

Nevertheless, it was that one day of the year when the office became as lively as the first day of spring and everyone got the chance to have their photos taken with these beauty queens.

Of the so called “Big 4” beauty pageants in the world I think that Miss Earth actually has the clearest advocacy or purpose. Not to offend the fans of the other three but unlike Confidently Beautiful, Beauty with a Purpose, or Love Peace and Beauty, Miss Earth’s “Beauty with a cause” aims to address issues concerning the environment and other global issues. Each candidate must have an advocacy they should promote to help fight climate change and protect the environment.

Its also our “very own” pageant since we  came up with the concept 17 years ago:

“Because many people admire and aspire to be a beauty queen, Carousel Productions, Inc. believed beauty queens would be a good and effective advocate of worthy causes. To give life to this vision, Carousel Productions Inc. organized and launched in 2001 the MISS EARTH Beauty Pageant, a beauty event whose raison d’etre was to have its candidates and winners actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of Mother Earth.

Apart from a strong emphasis on environmental protection programs, MISS EARTH also aims to showcase and promote various tourist destinations. Every year, 80 to 90 candidates from all over the world compete on beauty and knowledge of environmental issues.

The winner of MISS EARTH will serve as the Ambassador to environmental protection campaigns worldwide.”

Miss Earth contest uses the 4 Classical Elements: Earth, Air, Water and Fire as the name of its titles for their winners, with each  elemental titles declared of equal importance. In line with the goal of Miss Earth of “environmental awareness”, it is the only pageant which consistently asks questions in their Q & A portion regarding environmental awareness and preservation, which I think encourages the viewers especially the young ones to be more aware of their actions and its impact on the environment.

I also recently found out that the Miss Earth crown is made of 100% recycled precious metals. Since 2009, they have been giving this crown to the winner and the gemstones used in the crown were donated by the 80 plus participating nations of Miss Earth. These are gemstones that each country is known for either as the origin or source, making the crown really unique and a jack of all trades.

Now on it’s 17th year, MISS EARTH continues to build its reputation as the most relevant and worthwhile beauty event in the world, setting a legacy of beauty and responsibility, and after missing out a couple of years I was again fortunate enough to meet some of the candidates last Saturday thanks to an event hosted by MySlim.

MEET 10 CANDIDATES OF MISS PHILIPPINES EARTH 2017: L-R MISS NEW ZEALAND JESSICA ROSE MCEWEN, MISS PORAC PAMPANGA ANNE KRISHIA ANTONIO, MISS PULILAN BULACAN SAMANTHA VIKTORIA ACOSTA, MISS PUERTO PRINCESA CITY SANDRINE STOELZAED, MISS TAYABAS CITY LEA AUDREY LAANO, MISS MANDALUYONG CITY MARIE SHERRY ANN TORMES, MISS CITY OF MANILA KAREN IBASCO, MISS MARIKINA CITY KLAIDEL HOPE CONCEPCION, MISS PANGLAO BOHOL CATHERINE TABANIAG, AND MISS MAGSAYSAY MISAMIS ORIENTAL DANA
ROSE SACAOCO

Unlike my previous encounters with these beauties, however, where we had them sitting down during our Q&A, the 10 contestants we met had to stand for almost an hour, which must’ve been quite uncomfortable and tiring.

Get to know more about these ladies in this video as they talk about their personal advocacies:

Samantha Acosta, Miss Pulilan Bulacan, I think made the most impact that day with her stunning looks and poise. When asked about her advocacy she answered “I would really like to use my voice to be able to touch the lives of other people, especially the youth, so that I can inspire them to always allot at least 5 minutes of their time everyday to do something meaningful for the environment. I think that no matter how small it is for Mother Earth, it can be a beginning for something big.”

Another candidate who impressed the media guests was Miss Manila Karen Ibasco, aside from her very eloquent answers she made a lot of good points “We have to be prepared mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially as well because you will represent the Philippines in an international pageant.”

The only time the candidates when they looked less tense was when asked who their showbiz crushes were:

Miss Pampanga, Anne Krishia Antonio “I only have one celebrity crush in the Philippines and that’s John Lloyd Cruz because just seeing his films and his interviews on TV really makes me happy.”

“As an international flight attendant, Gerald Anderson was one of my passengers and he was really admirable person and I was so shy to serve him.” Miss Puerto Princesa, Sadrine Stoelzaed
Miss Manila, Karen Ibasco: “My celebrity crush for local would still be Piolo Pascual. He is a person who knows what he does and is very professional. He maintains a beautiful body despite his age..”

“My celebrity crush is James Reid.” Miss Tayabas, Lea Audrey Laano

Miss New Zealand, Jessica Rose McEwen “I honestly admire all of the actors out there because they really put their hearts into what they do. And of course they show their personality onscreen and offscreen and I think that’s what really makes them attractive to everybody in the Philippines.”
