Call her Maybe? Watch Her Surely! Carly Rae Jepsen live in Manila!

Reality singing competitions have always been in search of the next big star, but as Carly Rae Jepsen has proven, you don’t actually have to be the winner to find success in the music industry. Jepsen, who only placed third in Canadian Idol Season 5, didn’t let the setback stop her from pursuing her dream, as she released her debut album Tug of War in 2008.

Three years later, she released the single, titled “Call Me Maybe,” an upbeat teen pop track that draws influences from dance-pop and disco. It has since become the anthem of many lovelorn teens all over the world that alludes to the inconvenience of falling in love at first sight and waiting for a call back from a crush.
Fellow Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber referred her to his manager, Scooter Braun, who subsequently signed Jepsen, after “Call Me Maybe” gained popularity on YouTube by reaching 400 million views.

The single would then become the first no. 1 hit by a Canadian female artist on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since 2007’s “Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne, and the made Jepsen the first Canadian artist to reach the top of the digital chart since Justin Bieber’s “Baby” in January 2010.

“Call Me Maybe” was also nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 55th Annual ceremony and won Song of the Year for 2012 from MTV.

Jepsen has since received multiple awards and nominations, including three Juno Awards and two Grammy Award nominations and was named by Billboard as 2012’s Rising Star. She has been catapulted to become a global phenomenon not only in the music industry but also in social media with over 7.5 million likes in her official Facebook fanpage and close to 8 million followers on Twitter.
