The Name
Crumpler’s first workbag collection for women is aptly named Wren. It was inspired by the United Kingdom’s Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS).

During the First and Second World Wars, the women of WRENS served as cooks, radio operators, weapons analysts, air mechanics and pilots. They were recruited so that more men could be utilized as pilots for the fleets.

Although it may seem like they were given a subordinate role to give way to the men, it was a big step in how the society saw women. The women of WRENS proved that they were capable of jobs aside from household upkeep.

In 1994, the Wrens were integrated into the Royal Navy, and female naval personnel were granted equal status with their male counterparts. The importance of the Wrens in maritime and social history is unquestionable.
