A decade ago, the World Cyber Games (then called World Cyber Game Challenge) was formed, and since then it has become the largest global electronic sport tournament, with divisions in various countries. Considered as the Olympics of gaming, the WCG emulates other traditional sporting tournaments, as events include an official opening ceremony where players from various countries compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Besides providing a platform for tournament gaming, the WCG likewise serves as a gaming industry conference – drawing industry leaders and technology experts as speakers and attendees, to share ideas about the present and future of e-sports and their cultural relevance to society. For competitive gamers, being part of the WCG official delegation is not only a dream but the epitome of one’s e-sport career.
This year, Gameclub proudly sends the only Philippine delegation to the WCG, which is being held in Busan, Korea from December 8 to December 11, 2011.
After months of regional competitions, it was Team MOTV from Cebu won and Cristal (formerly AZK) and Saintz from Manila emerged as the top two teams of the Crossfire Pride of Champions League. Members of the two teams were then brought together to form the official Philippine delegation and renamed Team MOTV-CRISTAL.
The Philippine Crossfire team won 3rd Place in the World E-Sports Masters last year in Hangzhou, China, but will be facing even tougher competition as they go head to head with China, Vietnam, Korea, Germany, US, Indonesia, Russia, Taiwan, Canada, and Japan.
The other official games for WCG 2011 are Asphalt 6: Adrenaline; Counter-Strike 1.6; FIFA 11; League of Legends; Special Force; StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty; Tekken 6; Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
