Your clothing may make up the majority of an outfit, but it’s the accessories you use that make it stand out and express your individuality.
Accessories can be a bag, a pair of oversized shades, charm bracelets, native necklaces—the list goes on and the only limit is your imagination. Even the simplest outfit, such as a shirt and jeans can become fabulous with a bit of creativity and the right choice of accessories.
As revered fashion designer Giorgio Armani said, “Accessories are important and becoming more and more important every day.”
On its fourth year of competition, the Look of Style Awards (LOSA), introduces a new category, “Accessories Design,” to make way for young Filipino talents and discover the next big fashion icon.
“We want to be inclusive because fashion isn’t just about apparel, and we feel that adding this new category will set Look of Style Awards from other local design competitions,” said Carmencita Sioson, editor in chief of Look Magazine.
The annual nationwide design competition has helped jump-start the careers of Pablo Cabahug (2010), Geof Gonzales (2011) and Roland Alzaté (2012).
Besides the promise of fame and fortune, however, the LOSA distinguishes itself from other competitions by incorporating an educational component in its prize, as the winner gets an all-expense-paid trip to the United Kingdom to enroll in a short course of their choice.
“It’s always exciting to discover new talent and to contribute to the career development of the next generation’s designers,” adds Sioson. “This year, Look has again partnered with the British Council, to support emerging designers not only in the field of fashion design, but also of accessories design. To make things even more exciting this year, we have invited several leading industry professionals as our finalists’ mentors.”
We are delighted to spend another season working with the Look of Style Awards, as this continuous engagement facilitates cross-promotion of arts education in the UK and further collaboration and showcasing in the Philippines,” says Amanda Burrell, country director of the British Council.
‘Pinoy goes Global’
While contestants in the clothing category must create an original five-piece collection based on a chosen theme, participants in the accessories category can choose to interpret the theme through an original five-piece collection of shoes, bags, or jewelry.

For this year’s chosen theme, Pinoy Goes Global, finalists must present the new generation’s take on Filipiniana fashion (terno, barong Tagalog, baro’t saya, etc.). While still making use of local fabrics and sewing techniques, finalists must show Filipiniana clothing’s potential for mainstream fashion.
A panel of judges will select 10 finalists in the clothing category and 12 finalists in the accessories category. All finalists’ collections will be presented in a cocktail event, fashion show, and exhibit on November 14. One winner in the clothing category and one winner in the accessories category will be announced on the same night.

The winner of the clothing category will receive an all-expense-paid trip to England, to take up a short course of his or her choice at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, where fashion greats John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen are among its famous alumni. The winner of the accessories category will also receive an all-expense-paid trip to England to study at the Sheffield Hallam University in South Yorkshire.
Select judges will preside over go-sees in the following places and dates: Davao Cebu (July 29 to 31), and Manila (August 8 to 9). Interested parties may also check Look Magazine’s Facebook page for complete details on how to qualify and join the 2013 Look Of Style Awards.
