Huawei Y9S: Unboxing and First Impressions– P30 with a Pop-Up?

Pop-up cameras were one of the biggest trends of 2019, and just about every smartphone brand, in their quest to create a phone with a truly bezel-less display, had their own interpretations. But the one thing most of them had in common, was the expensive price tags.

That’s why the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 became a hit when it was released late last year, because it made the Pop-Up camera feature more accessible to everyone.

This year, Huawei brings the Pop-up camera feature to the entry-level market with the Huawei Y9S. Sharing the same DNA of the Y9 Prime, the Y9s offers the same large screen and battery, but with an even better triple camera setup, and improved RAM and bigger storage.

What makes the Y9s even more interesting is that it also borrows a few other elements from two of Huawei’s best-selling phones—the P30 and the Nova 5T!

All that for the price of P13,990!

But will the Y9s be enough to satisfy your inner Technivore?

We got our hands on one of the first units of the Huawei Y9s and here is our unboxing and first impressions.

The Huawei Y9S comes in the standard white box, with an actual sized photo of the phone on the front and some quick specs on the bottom.

Inside the box, you’ll find the Huawei Y9S smartphone, documents, a wall charger (5V 2A) USB Type-C cable, SIM ejector pin, 3.5mm earphones, and soft protective case.

It looks like a P30!

The unit we got was the Breathing Crystal variant, and if that sounds familiar, its because it is the same best-selling color option of the P30 series!

It also comes in Midnight black if you want something sleek but subdued.

The Huawei Y9s sports a curved glass back, instantly makes it look and feel quite premium as compared to the “glasstic” finish of other smartphones in its price range.

The polished glass body with 3D arc design delivers a smooth and comfortable feeling once you hold it in your hands.

The Y9s has a 6.59-inch Ultra FullView display at the front, and no notch, giving it an impressive 91% screen-to-body ratio. While the 2340×1080 FHD+ display with 391PPI promises clearer and brighter colours for a more immersive viewing experience.

Turn it around and you’ll see the vertical triple camera setup along with an LED flash at the upper leftmost and the company logo just below.

Just like the Nova 5T, the power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

On the right is the volume rocker and the power button which like the Nova 5T doubles as a fingerprint scanner. After using the Nova 5T I’ve realized that the side fingerprint scanner is actually much better than the rear one, especially if you are right handed. For lefties its better to register your index finger instead.

There’s a 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port, and loudspeaker on the bottom and up top is the pop-up selfie camera, SIM tray, and microphone.

When it comes to mobile photography Huawei has proven itself to be the best and the Y9s certainly does not disappoint. The triple rear cameras is composed of a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

The 48MP Main Camera features a 6 Plastic (6P) lens with a large aperture of f/1.8 effectively increases the quality and clarity of images.  The 8MP Ultra Wide-Angle Camera offers a 120-degree field-of-view for photo and video shooting. This is almost double the viewing angle of the 78-degree traditional lenses can offer. The 2MP Depth Camera helps with background blurring to create professional bokeh effects, making portraits more vibrant.

For taking selfies, the Y9s has a 16-megapixel pop-up camera.

Camera modes include Aperture, Night, Portrait, Photo and Video. Tap on more to access PRO mode, slowmo Panorama, AR lens, Light Painting, HDR, TImeLapse, Moving Picture, Filter and Stickers.

The Huawei Y9S is powered by the newer Kirin 710F chipset and is equipped with 6GB+128GB expandable to 512GB storage, and packs a long lasting 4,000 mAh battery. The Kirin 710 has proven itself to be a very capable of handling most tasks without lag and great for playing even those graphically demanding games. We’ll see how well it performs when we do our indepth review.

Check out our initial camera samples below:

Most surprisingly the Y9s has Google Mobile Services preinstalled and runs on Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.1 on top.

If you’ve been wanting to get the Huawei Y9 Prime but missed out last year, you are in luck as the Huawei Y9s is well worth the upgrade.

If you’ve always wanted to have a phone that comes in the same Breathing Crystal color as the P30, the Y9s is certainly a phone that will catch everyone’s attention.

If you want a phone that can take social media ready photos, the Y9s has a versatile camera setup that lets you capture the moment whether it’s as bright as day or dark as night thanks to nightmode and AI technology.

If you hate the notch, the Y9s pop up front camera gives you the full screen viewing experience without any distracting cutout.

Plus its KIRIN 710F processor and 4000 mah large battery can handle any task—whether is browsing your social media feed, watching videos, or playing games– all day long.

The side fingerprint scanner is also a more convenient way to secure and unlock your phone.
