Huawei Seeds for the Future: An international study program for Filipino Tech and Science students

 Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions providerpresented to media the ten(10) students selected to participate in its global CSR Program called Huawei Seeds for the Future. Seeds for the future is Huawei’s Global CSR Program. Initiated by Huawei since 2008, the program seeks to develop local ICT Talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote greater understanding of and interest in the telecommunications sector, and improve and encourage regional building and participation in the digital community.

History and Partner Schools

The Philippines joined Seeds for the future program in 2015 starting with two (2) partner schools- Ateneo De Manila University and Mapua University. Since then, Huawei Philippines have signed partnerships with De La Salle University, Smart Sweep and with the Department of Information and Communication Technology-Philippine Start-UP Challenge Competition. These partnerships gave opportunities to students coming from other parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao to join the program.

Program Offering

Huawei Seeds for the future work-study program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to travel to China for a two-week period. During the first week, participants will be in Beijing for an immersive introduction to Chinese language, Culture and Arts. The following week, participants will be in Shenzhen and work with Huawei Team in Huawei’s Global Headquarters, learning about Huawei’s international culture, strategy, and values, and receive technical training from some of the finest professionals in the industry. Travel and accommodations are provided by Huawei.

The students participating in this year’s Seeds for the future are: Gilene Christelle Lugtu and Richmond Roi Rodriguez, BS ECE Students from Ateneo De Manila University, Adrian Charles Mendoza and Ian Benedict Ona from De La Salle University BS Computer Science Students, Jean Miguel Antoine Santos and Seeta Jain from BS IS and BS CS students from Mapua University, Noel Daniel Seldura, BS IT student from the University of San Jose Recoletos-Cebu/Smart Sweep Winner, and  Danielle Joie Rodriguez , Allan Sambrano and Patrick John Llamoso, BSBA Students from Far Eastern University and second place winner of the DICT’s Philippine Start-UP Challenge.

“This is a once in a lifetime experience, it’s a trip that you will cherish and wish to repeat again”  according to Jeremy Macrohon, batch 2015, the pioneer batch of Huawei PH Seeds. 

Hillary Fong batch 2016 said that “I learned a lot during the trip. Huawei opens opportunities to learn and experience how to work in a multicultural environment. I am now working in Huawei Philippines and I hope to visit Huawei Headquarters once more”.

“This is our fifth trip in five years and a total of fifty (50) students from the Philippines are now members of Huawei Seeds for the Future Program. We hope to continue the program in the years to come because there are so many deserving and talented students in the Philippines. This is our contribution to local talent development ” says Karrie Buenafe, Huawei Seeds Program Head in the Philippines.
