From Miss Universe to Online mentor? Pia Wurtzbach to help choose new batch of 51talk online teachers

Pia Wurtzbach endorses online ESL platform to help offset job losses caused by pandemic

When it comes to perseverance, no one could question the ambition and drive of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach. We all know her story and her journey to become our Miss Universe, but her reign of inspiration continues as Queen P takes on a new role as the brand ambassador of 51Talk, an online English education platform.

But more than just being the face of the brand, Pia will also be helping the 51Talk choose the best candidates as she will also be interviewing potential candidates.

These interview sessions with Pia and 51Talk will be streamed live in Facebook to encourage netizens to sign-up and to also give a glimpse on how the process of becoming an online teacher usually takes place.

Queen P made the exciting announcement during 51Talk’s Facebook livestream to her 1.7 million plus followers. When asked by host Tim Yap, Pia shared that she is doing this to help spread awareness about the livelihood opportunity being offered by 51Talk, she would be able to help out Filipinos whose livelihood and jobs were severely impacted by the pandemic.

Founded in 2011, NYSE-listed 51Talk is the leading online English education platform that connects more than 20,000 online Filipino teachers to millions of foreign students through live and interactive lessons.

As the company launched Pia as their new brand ambassador, 51Talk also announced  expanding their teacher base in the Philippines by opening up 30,000 home-based online English positions to meet the ever-increasing demand for ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers primarily from China.

In the recent months, home-based online types of jobs and livelihood have gained massive popularity as it is considered the safest way to continue earning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s hard to imagine how some of our kababayans are going through right now because of the massive layoffs and closure of businesses due to COVID-19. We really have to rethink how we as a society conducts businesses while remaining safe and ensuring the health and well-being of everyone,” shared Pia.

Since her Miss Universe reign, Pia considers empowering Filipinos as her top advocacy and she wanted to use her voice and influence to spread awareness about earning opportunities by becoming an online English teacher with 51Talk, especially nowadays when thousands have already lost their jobs and livelihood.

According to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, since January of 2020, more than 3,000 businesses have temporarily shut down while 200 have closed down permanently, affecting around 100,000 workers across the Philippines.

51Talk Founder and CEO Jack Huang believes that Filipinos are the best online English teachers because of their high English proficiency, passion and friendly nature, and familiarity with the Chinese culture.

“I encourage everyone to consider online English teaching as a viable and sustainable source of income, especially in these trying times where jobs are scarce,” said Pia. “If you think you are ready to embark on your new online career then maybe this is the chance you’ve been waiting for. Who knows, perhaps 51Talk is your future at home,” she said.
