Part Gone Girl, part Nancy Drew, part Hitchcock, A Simple Favor is an unexpectedly fun watch

Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a mommy vlogger  who uses her instructional videos  to search for her “best friend,” Emily (Blake Lively), when she suddenly goes missing. As the police hunt for Emily, Stephanie grows close to Emily’s hunky novelist husband, Sean (Henry Golding), but things begin to unravel as both women’s pasts expose dark secrets.

Originally a novel by Darcey Bell, “A Simple Favor” will follow the life of Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger, as she met an ultra-glamorous mom, Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), and how they became friends.

One afternoon, Emily asked Stephanie for a simple favor and as Stephanie agreed, Emily mysteriously disappeared. After Stephanie found out that her friend is missing, she goes to rescue and find her missing friend. As she continues her journey looking for Emily, she will discover several things about her friend’s mysterious past.

It is a sinuous thriller with as many twists and turns as a mountain road its feels like you are watching Gone Girl in the beginning, before Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) goes Nancy Drew with enough suspense and dark twists reminiscent of a Hitchcock flick– all thanks to director Paul Feig’s signature wry humor.

Directed by Paul Feig, “A Simple Favor” is a stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge.

Paul Feig has made a name for himself with outrageous comedies like Bridemaids, as well as the suspense flicks The Heat and Spy.

I love Anna Kendrick and my partner adores Blake Lively, so it was for us a very entertaining flick just to see how well the two actresses interacted on screen.

Kendrick remains cute but also displays her sexy side and her transformation from an over participative school mom to mystery solver was fun to watch. Lively  gives full Hitchcock blonde with glee, and is the exact opposite of “loser” Stephanie. She is as poised, well dressed as she is enigmatic. While, Golding who has quickly become everyone’s new favorite hunk,  because of the massive success of Crazy Rich Asians exudes real movie star charm, and how he portrays the hopeless, clueless and manipulated  husband is also quite good.

If you love these kinds of suspense/ mysteries without much of the violence but with all the twists do your date a favor and watch “A Simple Favor.”

Now if you want a more action-packed date movie–there’s The Predator which also opens this week.

From the bloody R-Rated franchise, “The Predator” brings the universe’s most lethal hunters back on Earth.
Set in a small town, a young boy accidentally triggers a signal that called the Predators and landed on their area. Now, a group of ex-soldiers and a science teacher will have to face the Predators, who evolved and became stronger, smarter and deadlier after they upgraded their DNA with other alien species.
“The Predator”, directed and co-written by Shane Black, features lead actors Olivia Munn, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key and Sterling K. Brown
