The P9,990 Smartphone Quick Comparison Guide

When Huawei released the Nova 2i late last year, it quickly became a hit among Filipinos especially those looking for a breakthrough device that doesnt break the bank.

Selling 1,000 units in just an hour on the first day of its availability, it also became the most searched android smartphone in the Philippines according to Google’s Annual Year in Search.

Today, March 24 2018, Huawei is launching a lighter version of the Nova 2i–  The Nova 2 Lite, which comes with a dual camera setup, a 5.99-inch HD+ display, Snapdragon 430 chipset, 3GB RAM, and a look that’s worthy of its superstar lineage.

But how does it fare with the other top smartphones in the very fierce sub P10k category?

We’ll compare it to several other top smartphones which are all priced at P9,990–  the OPPO A83, Moto G5S,  and the Vivo Y69.

If you’ve ever owned a Huawei phone, you know that you are going to get a very dependable phone with a pretty good camera and the Nova 2 Lite upholds that reputation. The Nova 2 Lite is  Huawei’s most affordable dual camera phone, and if you’ve ever seen those photos with the blurred background, you can do all that with the Nova 2 Lite’s 13MP + 2MP rear cameras w/ LED flash. Huawei Nova 2 Lite. The 8MP f/2.0 aperture,  front camera w/ soft light LED flash is the kind you’d expect from smartphone of this price range.

The Nova 2 Lite  retains the 18:9 display aspect ratio on its 5.99 inch HD screen but it is a bump down from the Nova 2i’s Full HD screen. The difference isn’t all that noticeable when you are just browsing through your social media feeds, but you’ll miss the higher resolution a bit when watching those videos on Youtube.

It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 1.4GHz octa-core processor and Adreno 505 GPU which makes it a  good option if you love playing games on your smartphone as it runs a lot of games without the slowdown on medium settings.

The OPPO A83 has 5.7-inch 1440 x 720, 18:9 Full Screen display, 282ppi, powered by a MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 2.5GHz octa-core processor Mali-G71 MP2 GPU with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage (expandable) It has a 13MP rear camera, LED flash and an 8MP front camera, screen flash, A.I. Beautification Technology.  It runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat with ColorOS 3.2 and is powered by a 3,180mAh battery. Dimensions are 150.5 x 73.1 x 7.7 mm and weighs 143 g. It is available in Black and Gold.

Both the Nova 2 Lite and the OPPO A83 have the same HD+ (1440 x 720) resolution with 18:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D curved glass. The Nova 2 Lite has a slightly larger screen, but the  A83 has a slightly higher pixel density.

Both smartphones  have 13MP main rear shooters, but the Nova 2 Lite has another 2MP secondary camera that enables Bokeh effects. Another advantage for the Nova 2 lite is having a fingerprint scanner which the A83 lacks and the Nova 2 lite comes with the latest Android 8.0 Oreo as compared to the Android 7.0 Nougat of the OPPO A83. The OPPO A83 meanwhile has a slightly faster processor and bigger battery 3180 mAh vs 3000mAh. It is also a bit lighter than the Nova 2 lite.


The Moto G5S features a 5.2-inch FHD IPS 1920 x 1080 resolution w/ Gorilla Glass 3 protection at 423 ppi powered by 1.4GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor and Adreno 505 GPU. It has 3GB RAM and a storage. of 32GB expandable via microSD card slot up to 128GB. Back camera has a 16MP f/2.0 w/ PDAF and dual tone LED flash while the front camera is 5MP f/2.0 w/ LED flash. Battery is 3,000mAh w/ TurboPower charging and runs Android 7.1 Nougat.

The Nova 2 Lite again has a bigger screen, dual cameras compared to the G5s single camera and better front cam. Huawei’s phone also has the  latest version of Android out of the box and a face unlock feature. The Moto G5S on the other hand edges the Nova 2 Lite because it has TurboPower charging, and has a water repellent nano-coating.



The Vivo Y69 recently had a price drop from P10,990 to P9,990. It has a  5.5-inch HD IPS 1280 x 720 resolution w/ 2.5D curved glass and Gorilla Glass 3 protection at 267 ppi. Runs a 1.5GHz 64-bit MT6750 octa-core processor and Mali-T860 MP2 with 3GB RAM and 32GB expandable storage  up to 128GB (dedicated). The back camera has a 13MP f/2.2 w/ AF and dual tone LED flash but its front cam is 16MP f/2.0  w/ softlight flash. Battery is 3,000mAh and it runs Android 7.0 Nougat OS

The  Vivo Y69 clearly has the better front camera due to its 16MP sensor, but the Nova 2 Lite has the better dual camera setup. The Nova 2 Lite also has the advantage in terms of screensize, faster chipset and GPU, and it again has Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box.
