Ah the 3310.
Just the mere mention about its name is enough to bring back lots of fond memories. Perhaps it’s because it was the first cell phone a lot of us ever owned. And when you ask the 3310 owners about their favorite feature of the phone, its not their high score in Snake, or the iconic Nokia ringtone, or the bazillion kinds of housing or the backlight you installed– that everyone still remembers, but just how effin tough it was.
Have you heard about the story how the 3310 came to be which eventually led to the rise of Nokia?
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, during the first cellphone boom, there were 3 major companies namely Motorola (Hello Moto!), Ericsson (Sony) & Nokia. While Ericsson and Motorola were known for their highly reliable phones, Nokia was popular for its “Value for money” phones. The radio chips which went into phones of Ericsson and Nokia were supplied by Philips which manufactured them in a semiconductor plant in New Mexico.
In March 2000, a lightning bolt struck a high-voltage electricity line in New Mexico which led to fire in Philips plant and chips worth millions of dollars which were supposed to be shipped to Nokia and Ericsson were damaged. Although Philips assured them that situation was under control and normal production would resume within a week, Nokia went into alert mode.
Wasting no time, Nokia called for bids from other semiconductor companies to supply chips and quickly finalized deals with chip-vendors, while Ericsson chose to wait it out. After 2 weeks, Philips admitted that the plant would take 6-8 more weeks to return to normal which delayed the production of Ericsson phones.
Seizing the opportunity Nokia re-engineered some of its existing phone models so that generic chips (off the shelf) could be used from other semiconductor companies to quickly bring those new phone variants to market and in the next few months, Nokia replaced its popular 3210 phone model with a better build and launched it as the “Nokia 3310” in August 2000–and there was no stopping for Nokia.
Now the 3310 makes a return after almost 17 years hoping it could again help Nokia re-enter a very different phone market.
