Basketball never stops and with the Filipinos arguably the best basketball fans in the world, love of the game is experienced like never before when the Philippines plays host to international basketball tournaments. When Smart Gilas players suit up with the familiar jerseys this week, fans drop everything watch every play unfold while praying fervently that when the final buzzer is heard, the final score favors our national team.
For one whole week, Filipinos will be glued to every game played by the Smart Gilas selection tasked to rule the 12th Southeast Asian Basketball Championship (SEABA) on May 12-18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in order to qualify for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, which to us can only mean one thing: A clear shot at basketball glory. SEABA is our only return ticket to FIBA Asia, which will lead the Philippines back on the Olympic basketball map.
“We are hopeful that we will be better and should be better to win the SEABA tournament to enter the 2017 FIBA Asia Championship,” said Manny V. Pangilinan, Chairman of PLDT and Smart and former Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President. “We will make sure that our subscribers will have access to the game wherever they may be so there’s no reason to miss out on any of the games and the action that comes with each game.”
