The Not So Ordinary Realizations Of Ian Batherson

For Ian Batherson, 2013 was a year of challenges, of new learnings and finding new respect for his craft.

“2013 was a big year of improvement talaga, and ang daming realizations ko sa sarili ko.” he told WhereisEdUy.com in an interview last January 6, at Sir Boy’s Food Republique.

This year, kung may offer akong job ay tatanggapin ko kaagad. I just really feel na it’s time to be really serious sa career.”

Born January 14, 1989 in Germany, Ian (Magistrado) Batherson grew up in Japan, Alaska, California, Guam and the Philippines. He first gained attention as a finalist in the 5th season of GMA Network’s StarStruck.  He was also a contestant on the third season of Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown before signing up a 2-year movie deal with Regal Films as one of the “Hunks of Regal.”

He has also done several commercials for brands such as Greenwhich, Samsung, Coke and Ponds: White Beauty shot in Hong Kong.

After three years in Philippine showbiz, Ian, who turns 25 this month, begins his journey anew as part of Backroom, Inc.’s Not Your Ordinary Boys and Girl group, together with Carlo Sawit, PJ Go, Avery Paraiso, Benj Bolivar, Kaye Chua, Maui Lumba, and Bon Jovi Osorio.

“When I was 21, you kind of hit the whole aspect na you walk around the mall and the people know you. They ask you for photo and at that age I was just like ‘My gosh, this is so cool.’ Pero ngayon, its kind of sunk in and I believe na may responsibilidad ako bilang isang artista dito sa Pilipinas. I have a responsibility to work on my craft dahil you have to love your crowd. Kasi if you don’t love the crowd, they won’t love you back. It’s a give and take relationship talaga. And I believe the only way to do that is to improve your craft through workshops. You really have to respect yourself as an artist and kung wala ka nung tools, you will not go anywhere.”

Ian says he is very thankful now that he is able to explore his artistry more under the tutelage of Boy Abunda’s Backroom, Inc

Together with the other members of NYOBG, Ian has undergone dancing workshops with G-Force, singing workshops with Annie Quintos of The Company; acting sessions with renowned filmmaker Laurice Guillen and actor Pen Medina; and hosting under the mentorship of Mr. Boy Abunda himself.

“Ang hirap ng mga workshops, they’re very challenging pero yun ang gusto ko kase we know that it will help us in our career,” Ian noted.

From being a solo performer was he surprised when Tito Boy formed and included him in NYOBG?

“We all know how brilliant Tito Boy is when it comes to his talents so hindi ako na-surprise when he decided to put all of us together in a team. Expected talaga dahil sobrang galing ni Tito Boy. I’m just blessed and I just feel na malaki ang naging improvement ko ever since I joined Backroom.”

What does he bring to the group?
“As of now, I do the hosting part and also participate in the dance numbers.”

“I like to rap because it’s fun but I also sing pop, R&B and perform acoustic songs. I can’t do that before because mahiyain ako but now I look forward to our shows,” expressed Ian. “Naging hilig ko ang rap when I was younger pero actually I was kinda shy kasi I don’t look like a rapper but now I’m just thinking that at this stage of my life I want to discover different adventures in my life.”

Ian hopes he could eventually do a rap number in one of their future shows. He admits to being a fan of Abra, which is also a good friend of his, and says his favorites include Drake and Kanye West. “Sana I could eventually have an album, not just rap but also do alternative, rock and even country and blues, I want it to have different elements.”

“Tito Boy told us all that we must be patient and enjoy all the PAGCOR shows that we are doing to make ourselves better. He also told me to always work on my craft, and go back to my core. Siya ang teacher namin sa hosting workshops namin. Sobrang bihirang mangyari yan and hosting is something I also want to be open to because I feel I’m comfortable doing that,” he added.

This year Ian says he just wants to apply all he learned from the workshops.

He also clarified that his shift to music and hosting was not because he was disappointed about his acting career. “Siguro everything that’s happened is part of my growth as an artist, I’m just ready to look forward to the future and wag na lang sa past kasi if you keep on looking sa past hindi ka mag excel sa future. Nagkaroon naman ako ng decent project last year yung ‘Kung Fu Divas.’ Even if it was a humble role it was a blessing for me,” he explained.

So what’s “not ordinary” about him?
“I would say hindi kase ako takot to think outside of the box. I must say yung versatility and also kahit parang ang tagal ko na sa industriya, like almost three years, gutom pa rin ako sa improvement para sa sarili ko, working on my craft,” he humbly answered.

His target for 2014?

“I just want to be happy and for that you have to be content with what you have,” he shared.
